Public Programs
DUKES COUNTY ANNOUNCES FOUR PUBLIC WALKS
JULY AND AUGUST, 2005

The following free public walks will be offered this summer.

All of them will be held on Wednesday afternoons, from 2:00 to 4:00.

They are free!  No advance registration required!

Programs will be led by Robert Culbert, Beach Manager, County of Dukes County

Wednesday July 6                        Piping Plovers and Other Nesting Birds

Meet at the Big Bridge on Joseph Sylvia State Beach.

You will get to see piping plovers and will learn about the management actions we use to protect this state and federally protected species.  Close looks at least terns and American oystercatchers are also likely.

Beach Dynamics and Erosion Along the South Shore of Martha's Vineyard

Meet at the left fork parking lot at the end of Katama Road.

You will learn about coastal processes, including the seasonal and long term patterns of erosion and accretion along the South Shore of the Vineyard.  We will walk out onto Norton Point Beach for a detailed look at dune restoration and the effects of human use of the beach.



Wednesday August 3              Erosion and Beach Nourishment
on Joseph Sylvia State Beach

Meet at the Little Bridge on Joseph Sylvia State Beach.

You will learn about coastal processes, including the history of erosion and beach nourishment at the north end of State Beach, the effects of jetties and groins, and the complexities of dune restoration on a heavily used public beach.



Wednesday August 17             Identification of Migrating Shorebirds

Meet at the left fork parking lot at the end of Katama Road.

You will see and learn how to identify numerous species of shorebirds, including gulls, terns, sandpipers and plovers as we explore the tidal flats of Norton Point Beach.  In the photo on the right, leader Robert Culbert is teaching shorebird identification on this walk in 2004.  (Photo by Patrick Bradley)
