St. Vincent Christmas Disaster - help needed
Press Release - St. Vincent Christmas Disaster

Last year, Dukes County was approached by the Ambassador of the islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, islands located in the Caribbean, to institute a Sister Islands program with the islands of Dukes County. The Dukes County Commissioners endorsed the Sister Islands program between the islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the islands of Dukes County in order to foster efforts that would be mutually beneficial to both island groups.

We would like to bring the following sad news to your attention.

On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, St. Vincent along with the islands of St. Lucia and Dominica suffered widespread devastation caused by severe rains, flooding and high winds. This resulted in landslides and overflowing rivers, causing a number of deaths, a substantial number of injuries and severe damage to critical infrastructure including the hospital. After the disaster half of the population was left without drinking water and a portion of the islanders had to be evacuated and housed in temporary shelters.

The officials of St. Vincent and the Grenadines are seeking donations in cash and in kind to help assist with disaster recovery efforts and to meet critical needs of residents who have been hard hit by evacuations, power outages and water shortages.

The Embassy in Washington and the Consulate in New York is spearheading the relief efforts. The following information is from January 6th release by the Embassy:

We are informed that Standard Shippers Inc. has generously undertaken to ship the collected items from New York to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. However, one of our greatest logistical challenges at this point remains that of securing air freight and shipment of goods gratis, or at a significantly concessionary rate from other collection points in the USA. We urge those of you with contacts in the shipping industry to use your influence to assist us in this regard.

Monetary contributions are also urgently needed for the rebuilding and rehabilitation process. Your monetary contributions can be received via the following means:

1. A check sent in care of the Embassy to the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO)

2. Directly to NEMO’s Bank account:

National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO)
National Commercial Bank
Halifax Street
Account Number: 137736 Swift Code: NCB VVC 22
